NetHack
What's it all about? After the Creation, the cruel god Moloch rebelled against the authority of Marduk the Creator. Moloch stole from Marduk the most powerful of all the artifacts of the gods, the Amulet of Yendor, and he hid it in the dark cavities of Gehennom, the Under World, where he now lurks, and bides his time. Your god wants to get his hands on the Amulet of Yendor, so that he can rule the gods. Your destiny has been decided - find the amulet for your deity, or die in the process!
How does it differ? The graphics for the game are bigger, resulting in a smaller playing area on screen. Character statistics are measured similarly, with STR, INT, WIS, CON, DEX and CHA, along with alignment, something that has yet to make it into Angband or any of it's variants. Instead of the race/class combinations that we see in Angband itself, you can choose between 12 disciplines that reflect your background and training; Archaologist, Barbarian, Caveman, Elf, Healer, Knight, Priest, Rogue, Samurai, Tourist, Valkyrie and Wizard. You adventure with your pet - a dog or a cat. They will follow you around, attacking and eating anything in their way. Make sure you don't run out of food as a result of your pets overactive appetite!
Everything is hard coded into the NetHack executable, hence there is no scope for editing the game information unless you're willing to alter the source code and recompile it for yourself. NetHack has a fairly strange sense of humour, with some surprisingly ridiculous ways for you to die unexpectedly. Also, make sure that you don't abandon your pet - you could find them rabid, starving, and wanting you as their next meal! One of NetHack's ancestors is the game Rogue, which should come as no surprise.
