Ancient Domains Of Mystery (ADOM)
What's it all about? You live in a world known as Ancqardia, which was once a nice peaceful place. The great sage Khelavaster uncovered an ancient prophecy foretelling the Coming of Chaos, where the power of a single hero would determine the future of the world. The ancient scrolls containing the prophecy point you in the direction of a chain of mountains, the Drakalor Chain. No one who had ventured into the dungeons that lie beneath the chain have ever returned, not even Khelavaster. Guess who's turn it is to go there next?!
How does it differ? ADOM has it's own calendar and zodiac, and hence being born under each star sign has different effects. If you happen to be playing on your birthday, then you're bound to be rather lucky! You have 10 races to choose from, and 20 classes. Characters have alignments, similar to those found in AD&D. Characters have a certain number of skills that cannot be described by class, level or race. There are 40 different skills, with such obscurities as Ventriloquism, Cooking, Bridge Building, Herbalism and Fletchery - the latter having something to do with arrows, and not some obscure sexual practise as I had previously thought! Instead of the usual six attributes that your character is determined by, ADOM has Strength, Learning, Willpower, Dexterity, Toughness, Charisma, Appearance, Mana and Perception. Spell-wise, there are two spheres, Arcane and Clerical. Both can be cast by all spellcasters, but if a Mage should attempt to cast clerical spells, then it takes twice as much effort as it would for a Priest. The more a spell is cast, the easier it becomes to cast for the player. Everything is hard coded into the ADOM executable, so any changes that a user would wish to make would have to be performed on the source code, and then the game would have to be recompiled.
The game currently has no graphics - it relies solely on a coloured ASCII display. Some might be relieved to go back to the old days of Roguelikes, but for me I find it a very difficult thing to do since the advent of graphics in Moria.
